    Default Incarnate And Gravatar

Found this today and it reminds me of how Gravatar works although I think Incarnate doesn't have the scope that Gravatar has. Interesting to see none the less.

By the way, type in your username into the search box and see if your avatar shows up as the first result.

Somebody beat me to the punch on Twitter for @chipbennett, so I had to settle for @chip_bennett. Of course, @chipbennett is basically inactive.

Also, there are, apparently, X-Box live users with usernames chipbennett and chip_bennett.

Just about everything else related is me, though.

    That's a pretty neat idea.

Technically I think FaceBook owns your avatar so I'm assuming they're not allowed to actually putt your image from there are they?

Or is that something allowed as part of FaceBook connect perhaps?

I could easily be wrong (I'm not a lawyer) but Facebook requires you to indicate that you have the right to upload the image and as far as I know uploading the image doesn't revoke your rights to the image, so if you give this service the rights to use the same image, I can't think of any reason they wouldn't be allowed to pull it from Facebook (assuming Facebook doesn't block them in some way).

    Again, I'm not a lawyer.

I don't know about avatars specifically, but AFAIK, any images uploaded to a FaceBook photo gallery is forever more owned by FaceBook. I'm not a lawyer either and am basing it off that super accurate source of information, the rumour mill.

Well I've been on the internet for 10 years, but didn't start using andrea_r everywhere consistently until about 4 years ago (I think ) so there's plenty of not-mes out there in hidey corners of the internet.

    Like livejournal for instance...

kinda sorta. :) It's in their Terms of Service that basically they can use the images you upload any way they see fit. Like in ads for their service.

Indeed, the TOS don't claim to give ownership of images to Facebook, but rather a (quite liberal) license to use those images.

The potential problem with Incarnate is that it requires no authentication. I could put "andrea_r" into the form, and voila, I'm posing as you. With gravatar, you would at least have to know the email address of someone in order to hijack their image.
