Don't stress :) You are a prominent figurehead in the world of WordPress. You are going to get misquoted no matter how hard you try to explicitly state things. I have this sort of crap happen all the time in another community project I'm heavily involved in. If you keep your head high and just plow along as normal, everything will be fine ... albeit I have fairly thick skin, so am not bothered too much by the occasional moron who thinks I'm doing something evil and wrong, despite never having anything to do with what they think I've been doing.
Count me also in the camp that Matt's SABDFL approach is viable for the WordPress project.
But, with everything involved/inter-related - WordPress, wordpress.org, the wordpress.org theme/plugin repos, core plugins, Automattic, wordpress.com, akismet, polldaddy, gravatar, et al, WordCamps, etc. (and now, the WordPress Foundation) - it can't stay a one-man show in perpetuity.
Right now, Matt is: SABDFL of the WordPress project, owner and controller of wordpress.org, owner of Automattic, head of the WordPress Foundation, and public face of WordPress at WordCamps and elsewhere.
Long term, that kind of overload is untenable.
Eventually, Matt is going to have to decide which role or roles to fill, and pass the others off to others.
