    Icon13 wp + microsoft = wp hypocrisy

I have to keep this quick as it's gone midnight here in UK and I'm using my phone, but has anyone read the following article about wp.com moving to the microsoft cloud?

    http://www.inquisitr.com/48394/mullenweg-fails-again/

What are people's thoughts on all this? Mountain out of molehill?

(Huge apologies if this has already been posted... like I say, I'm on my phone and it's too difficult to check!)

First off, it's a real disservice to people to even link to that garbage. Nothing Duncan Riley has said on WordPress or Matt Mullenweg in any of his articles has a bit of truth in it. Just a bunch of garbage.

I've heard Matt predict a number of times at WordCamps that Microsoft at some point will become an open source dominated company. I think this Azure cloud thing could be a step in that direction. Sure, Microsoft has a pretty bad past when it comes to open source in general but with new leadership, perhaps that tide is beginning to change. Matt has strong beliefes in open source and openness in general. I think we should judge after the fact and not judge what may happen here based on a checkered past.

I really hope this is a hoax. I don't see anything good from that happening.

Very defiantly. Microsoft has been very antagonistic to linux and unix. Just within the last couple of weeks, the press released that microsoft patented sudo, a program that has been gpl'ed for at least 10 years, if not longer. And on the heels of finding out that they included gpl source in there windows 7 usb installer, this makes me very nervous.

I second that. There are people out there who seem to obsess over people who are more successful than they are and look for anything as an excuse to be critical of them.

I think the movement to the Microsoft cloud platform will be a good thing in the long term. From the sounds of it, it sounds like Matt might know some thing we currently don't. Maybe Microsoft is going more and more open source? I know Open Office has been a competitor for the highly overpriced (in my opinion) Microsoft Office, so maybe they're going to be pushing more towards the open source platform - who knows.

As far as the Duncan Riley writing, it all seems pretty link bait driven to me. Maybe he does feel that way, but the use of the words NAZI, ect. remind me of the political games people in office play - republicans and democrats, ect.

Well this article interviewing Tim O'reilly has a positive view of Microsoft's cloud computing. I do have a great deal of respect for Tim's work. http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Web-Service...en-Web-125998/.

Is it "moving to Azure" or simply "part of the infrastructure will run on Azure"?

None of the articles make that clear...
