What university is this? I've never heard of one that was so liberal with what it's students could do with their own research. All of my own research has been owned wholly by the university or by whomever was providing the funding for the research.

It's the School of Information & Library Science at the University of NC at Chapel Hill. Granted, my thesis was more of a project (e.g. it identified a problem and provided a solution) and not so much research...and I didn't get any funding. Maybe if I HAD been doing more of a research-based project and got funding, it would be a different story. Still, I've never heard of my department claiming ownership of students' Master's Papers (unless the student's paper was part of a school-initiated project, perhaps). Not sure about the PhD Dissertations though. Also, other departments at the university may have different policies.
