Icon11 RIP Dan Schulz

My good friend Dan Schulz and our fellow member of the WP Tavern community died this morning:
http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=646396

For those of you who don't know him, Dan was an avid WordPress fanatic and was working on an awesome WP theme project behind the scenes. He wasn't as well known as many of the other WordPress themers out there, but his HTML/CSS skills were second to none. He was one of the most prolific and well respected members of the SitePoint forum community with well over 15,000 posts. He was also well known on DigitalPoint, some SEO forums and here on the Tavern.

RIP Dan Schulz :(

Wow, i'm stunned and saddened by this news. I met Dan at WordCamp Chicago earlier this year and he was also a customer of our WP related business. My thoughts are with his family during this tough time. RIP Dan.

I was only talking to Dan a few days ago. I was concerned as he hadn't been online for at least a week which was rare for him. I chatted to him on MSN most days so was alarmed when he just disappeared out of the blue like that, but he replied back with the following so I just assumed he was out of hospital and getting better:

I ended up being hospitalized. Influenza (possibly H1N1), pneumonia, severe dehydration, acute nausea (vomiting way too ...

It does indeed sound like he had H1N1. Most H1N1 related deaths are due to it developing in to severe cases of pneumonia and respiratory failure. It can happen suddenly and in people that aren't typically a high risk for flu related complications (ie. young healthy adults).

It just reinforces the fact that life is short, don't take it for granted.

I'm shocked, speechless, don't know what to say. I never met Dan or even chatted with him but I certainly know of his reputation. The WordPress community is like one huge extended family and when the family loses a member it's a sad day. So long Dan.

Oh, how sad! Yes, it certainly does remind us how important it is to enjoy life to the fullest! My thoughts are with his friends and family.

.. and a big "Hell Yeah" for his last tweet:

So long Dan.

My condolences to his family.

The lord of every land, rising for them,
The Aton of the day, great of majesty.

Great Hymn of the Aton

Sad news indeed. I had the opportunity to sit next to Dan at WordCamp Chicago earlier this year as he sat with the WebDevStudios crew. I had no idea who Dan was at the time but I noticed he seemed very passionate at what he did. Was also a friendly guy to chat with. Despite alot of people never getting the chance to meet the guy in person, he has touched a few lives in his day.
