    Default Forking bbPress

    This thread makes me giggle but hey, if you think it's the best course of action, nothing stops you from doing it, just do it the right way and don't fragment the already small community for the original project.

    It would have been more polite to have that discussion elsewhere instead of on the official bbPress forum IMHO.

    Hopefully JJJ's comments will stop further discussion on the bbPress forums.

    Hello folks,

    Hope you don't mind me adding a comment here.

    I had no intention of having a discussion on the new project on the bbPress forum. I just included a link to my own website, and said thanks to those members of the bbPress community that left some comments.

    2 totally new people to bbPress (members less than a week, and both with less than 2 posts in different topics), with whom I could find no way of contacting outside of the bbPress forums had some of their points/questions answered. Everyone else on the thread had an email, most of them about 6-8 weeks ago.

    @Ryan, the discussion was held elsewhere. My original post was a link to that discussion. I can't see where I acted impolitely. In fact, i only politely answered the questions of those who added to the topic.

    @Jeffro:

    "don't fragment the already small community for the original project"

    I've a huge amount of respect for you mate, and your work here, but you are a bit out of touch with bbPress. "the original project" is being shut down, and replaced by something else. bbPress is a standalone forum, that's being replaced with a WordPress plug-in. The original project has gone the way of the dodo (matt deleted the 0.9 branch - code and all - some 4 months ago).

    The small community was fragmented ages ago, I was simply being courteous to the folks who'd taken time to leave a reply. It was manners that was my motivation, not any form of Machiavellian plan. There was, and is, nothing sinister in my replying to those people who do not supply their contact details for me to contact them off the bbPress forum. I've no idea how this caused offence, but if it has, I apologise profusely for being overly mannerly.

    @Rich

    If we've to "stop further discussion" on anything but the "original" bbPress project, won't that include JJJ's WordPress plug-in?
    ;-)

    Of course I don't want that. JJJ's WordPress forum plug-in will be great, and it'll please so many people. I'm super positive about that project, but lets not pretend that it's bbPress. It's not even a fork, or a continuation, or anything. It's a totally new bit of code, not based in any way on the original, that is dependant on a piece of software not associated with the original. Will it be awesome? Absolutely!! Will I use it on at least 3 projects the week it hits beta? Absolutely!! Are you guys applying one set of rules to the person/project you like, and another to everyone else? Absolutely!!

    I'm just a guy, giving up his spare time, to try and help those who will be left behind by the move from standalone to wordpress-dependant.

    No idea how this offended so many, but I am truly sorry that it has.

    Kev

    P.S. Dudes, can I also suggest... all my contact details are on my website. Throw me an email or text or call me. Heck, Rich you're in Liverpool, ring me if you've an issue bro. I'm a chatty son-of-a-gun, and tone and intination never come across well on the internet; I'm sure all of this could have been resolved in a more direct approach.

    Maybe it's an age thing dudes, because the three of you are defiantly mature and intelligent, but running to Twitter to tell the world of your distain at something when you could contact the person directly, seems somewhere between childish/cowardice and http://xkcd.com/386/ . I'm human and I make mistakes, but honestly, I'm an email/text/phone-call away, and I don't bite. If you've an issue with me or my actions, I'd respect you folks even more if you would say them directly to me.

    Take Care,
    Kev
    :)

    LOL yeah I guess you could interpret it that way ;)

    I see you've now asked for the mods to lock that thread, good call.

    I've been involved (not heavily) with a forked project before, so I know just how difficult it will be to keep momentum going - so I really do wish you luck with it.

    I can't find a link in your post a place for discussion though, just your blog post.

    Default 62 weeks

    So my attempts to keep a stand-alone forum going failed quite spectacularly, but I'm still happy I tried.

    That said, am I the only person who thinks that with a paid full-time developer, and help from 3 other "Automatticians" (and non-Automattic-employees who contribute to the WordPress core that never coded for bbPress 0.9 or 1.0), that maybe it shouldn't have taken 358 days from this post to the release of the bbPress plugin?

    From first commit to release, bbPress took: 436 days or 1 year, 2 months, 9 days or 62 weeks

    436 days for a WordPress plug-in that already had it's functionality defined, and had a paid for full-time developer?

    I like the new plug-in, and JJJ has done some really great work on it, but I'm still somewhat amazed by how much Kool-Aid drinking went on in regard to this project.

    What do you mean by Kool Aid drinking? By the way, I'm trying to schedule an interview with JJJ next week to specifically talk about bbPress. If you have a question or two you'd like me to ask him, post it here.

    It's worth noting that JJJ seems to have split his time between working on bbPress and BuddyPress. Other than that, not sure what made everything take so long.

    "Drinking the KoolAid" is a phrase used in the USA to describe someone who blindly believe in something without rationally thinking it through .... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinking_the_Kool-Aid

    That phrase confused the heck out of me too until I went and looked it up once.

    I knew what drinking the kool aid meant but I didn't know who was drinking it and possibly why.
