Wow, that's interesting. Strange that in the span of a week we went from what seemed to be no activity on bbPress to having two potential versions to choose from.
It's a shame that all the talent can't be pooled into one project to really make it excel. But in the end both branches could end up being quite different and useful in their own right.
I think it'd be cool if _CK_'s branch could stay on within bbPress as a classic or standalone version.
I think that's actually pretty damn awesome :) And that's why GPL (and Open Source) works, and how it should work, IMO. Rock on _ck_!

Many of her plugins work fine on 1.0 already. And with bbPress going to plugin land, they'd all have to be re-written anyway, so ... hard to say. She already wasn't going to convert her plugins for 1.0 (or 2.0 or plugin bb) so it's not like the effort wasn't already 'lost.'
No, no... my point is, future development of new bbPress plugins.
_ck_ was the most prolific plugin developer for bbPress - by far. Now, she'll be (presumably) focusing her efforts on core development for her bbPress fork, which will distract her (again, presumably) from future development of new bbPress plugins.

No, I got that. But you have to remember that _ck_ had not yet begun work on 1.0-ing her plugins, and in fact said she wasn't going to even consider starting before December 2009, AND she said 'fuck it' before that, unhappy at the direction.
In short, she was probably never going to apply her efforts to the new bbPress.
So ... it's not like we lost any more than we'd already lost, is all I'm saying. bbPress 2.0 was going to be sans-_ck_ regardless of this decision.
It's too bad. She'll barely have time for her own fork and will not be updating her plugins but instead, back porting them with 0.9 unless they already work with 0.9. Her development time into bbPress was already "pressed" but now it will be even more so. Instead of having her insight into the future of bbPress, now she'll be off doing her own thing. Congrats to her and all but it would have been cool to have her efforts involved with 1.0 or the future of the software.
From what I've heard from _ck_, she seems happy for 0.9 to remain as it is with minimal changes. I think she just wants a lean mean stable platform to work on, so presumably only bug/security fixes would need to be done.
