Yeah, it looks to me like 0.9 was the golden version of bbPress to _ck_. I think the biggest reason for the performance hit is all the backpress code that ended up in bbPress 1.0 which is not going anywhere anytime soon. Interesting that there would be such a performance hit between versions.

IIRC, _ck_ also loved the 1.5 version of WordPress, which really was a lean mean machine, but rather limited IMO. If ALL you want is a blog, though. the 1.5ish branches were pretty damn awesome. In order to grow from JUST a blog into a full CMS, WordPress took a hit. But really it's one of those things that when you become all things to all people, your code bloats. bbPress' initial selling point was that 'it's a lean, clean, board without all that cruft!'
Once they tossed in BackPress (which I do not think was a bad idea, but the execution went a bit weird), bbPress started running more threads and connections. I wish I could find that writeup someone did, comparing 1.0 to 0.9.
IMO, part of the problem with bbPress was timing. It came out and promised integration, but WP became a moving target as the devs were trying to lock down login and make it harder to hack. It was a good choice for WordPress, but was like a nut-shot to bbPress. Add in that bbPress got BackPress before WP did and ... eh. Things got out of sync :(

hate this thread.... Why? well I've given up on punBB, and am now giving up on the fork - fluxBB. Decided to move to bbpress to make things easier long term. I hope the main trunk continues to be developed, and personally I don't mind if it is a standalone, or a plugin.
Having a major plugin developer go off and fork a forum is not necessarily a good idea (don't get me wrong I wish her well), but I've experienced what happened with fluxBB and don't want to go down that route again.

Just remember, WordPress? Is a fork of b2.
-
yes, but it now has many years of a track record...
-
But it started as a fork :) I'm just pointing out that forking isn't always a bad thing (spoon jokes aside).
