    Icon2 bbPress Off And On

Hmm, taking a look at the ole bbPress.org website and the last post was on January 13th. Looks like there have not been any new IRC meetups since then either.

    http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/irc-chats

I know Matt has been very busy and has not had a chance to dedicate the time needed to the project but it's got to suck when you use a defibrillator on a project and it comes back to life with renewed energy only to have it flatline again.

I have heard though that the latest trunk build of bbPress has email notifications, one of the big features for the next version of the software. Maybe bbPress will only really get the attention it deserves or that it needs once the plugin is released.

Has anyone else been keeping tabs on the project?

There still seems to be stuff going on in trac so I think it is still actively being worked on.

I wanted to help, but it seemed that after the first IRC meeting or so it was looking like the project was going to just stagnate again, so I haven't taken much notice since.

    Same here.

I've even went so far as to code my own mini-forum using WP's custom post types and taxonomies. It's actually not too difficult. But, I lost the code on a recent computer crash. I might revisit the idea though.

Considering you two were part of the rally to get things back on track for the project, are you both still interested in helping out? Are you guys waiting on direction on what to do and where to go from Matt?

I pushed chrishajer to make some bug fixes, and he did a great job (as he is not a programmer), thats why you can see some changes in the trac in the recent days.

And yes, you have heard correct that there would be "subscribe to topic" feature and also these:
    1) Mass moderation of posts and topics (I have submitted patch for mass moderation of users, and also have ordering of users thing ready on my computer).
    2) Login-less posting

Sort of. But this sort of program requires someone with serious PHP chops to build it. That's not me. That's more the area of the likes of Justin and co.

It's not very motivating knowing that there is not a lot of interest from the top in starting everything from scratch either.

That sounds awesome, and awful, all rolled into one! Even if you release something very crude, that might be a handy base for others to build from.

I was very keen at one point on releasing a WordPress theme which exactly mimic'd the ProSilver theme of phpBB3, but when Matt started talking about turning bbPress into a WP plugin I decided to hold off until that was completed, and now I've all but given up on the idea.

I've already had to bail on one large'ish scale forum related project, I'd rather not add another on to that list by starting on something like that and then realising it needs to be rebuilt to accommodate a new (and better) forum software for WordPress.

There is only 1 ticket left for the 1.0.3 milestone

That's certainly good news! I manage a bbPress forum and some of the users will be very happy to have email subscriptions.

Though I'm really looking forward to bbPress being a plugin so that I can simply use a WordPress theme, and WordPress plugins with bbPress.

It's a shame that bbPress couldn't get in on some Google Summer of Code action, it could use the help more than most of the participating projects.

Sometimes I think the community should just pass the hat, collect some donations and find a few bigger sponsors and hire a developer so that they are able to really devote some time to the project.
